Athens ‘hopeful’ to advance relations with Ankara: Greek FM
The delimitation of Greece's maritime borders with Ankara is a dispute that the country is considering taking to an international court, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis says.
Greece is "hopeful" that relations and political communication with Türkiye will continue, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has said in his speech.
“We have had a process of getting together, at least of resetting, a more sincere and frank relationship with Türkiye,” the Greek Foreign Minister told Egypt's Al Qahera TV in an interview on August 3, which was released by the Greek Foreign Ministry on Monday.
In addition to this, Gerapetritis emphasized that he and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan met and discussed bilateral relations.
“What we want to do is to try to promote a positive agenda with issues of common interest, such as trade, economy, civil protection, tourism, the overall development of the two countries, and then work on our relationships,” the minister said.
Gerapetritis argued that the delimitation of maritime borders is a major difference between the two countries.
"We are considering to refer this dispute to the International Court of Justice in the Hague," he added.
At a NATO conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met. Both nations praised the encounter as a significant turning point.
This September, a new round of negotiations between Greece and Türkiye is anticipated to take place in Thessaloniki.
